The eufy Video Doorbell E340 works without a HomeBase and stores event clips in 8 GB of built-in eMMC storage on the doorbell. HomeBase Mini, HomeBase 2 and HomeBase 3 are supported options, but none is required for setup or local recording.

That makes the standalone E340 a complete documented route for a one-doorbell setup, but "no HomeBase" does not mean "no other requirements." You still need the eufy Security app and account, a compatible 2.4 GHz home Wi-Fi connection, a charged battery installed in the doorbell and a way to hear the chime indoors.

Doorbell alone versus a HomeBase bundle

The deciding question is not whether the E340 needs a HomeBase. It does not. The question is whether you want clips stored in the device at the door or centralized inside the home with room to build a larger eufy system.

What works without HomeBase

Eufy's E340 user guide describes a standalone mode: connect the doorbell to the home wireless router, add it in the eufy Security app and choose an alert method. The current specification lists 8 GB eMMC as storage on the doorbell and identifies the video-storage location as the doorbell itself.

The US E340 product page describes the same device as having 8 GB built in and no monthly fee for local storage. Eufy estimates that capacity at up to 90 days when the system records 30 clips of 20 seconds per day. Treat that as the manufacturer's usage example, not a guaranteed retention period: more events, longer clips and different settings use storage faster.

Without HomeBase, you can still use battery power or compatible existing doorbell wiring, receive app notifications, use two-way audio and choose from documented chime routes. The product page lists Alexa and Google Assistant support, but not Apple HomeKit.

What a HomeBase changes

Eufy's Complete HomeBase Compatibility Guide marks the E340 (T8214) as supported with HomeBase Mini, HomeBase 2 and HomeBase 3. The E340-specific product page and user guide still document HomeBase 2 and 3 for clip storage and indoor chime use. When paired with either of those documented routes, clips can be stored on the HomeBase instead of only in the doorbell.

A current HomeBase Mini compatibility FAQ also lists the E340 and says firmware updates may be required. Eufy does not publish an E340-specific minimum HomeBase Mini firmware version or feature comparison, so verify current firmware and the storage, chime and AI functions you need before assuming parity with HomeBase 2 or 3.

HomeBase 3 remains the better-documented E340 route when expandable storage is the reason for buying a hub. Those hub benefits are additions to the E340 rather than requirements for its basic standalone mode.

Do not buy a HomeBase only because a retailer's bundle layout makes the doorbell-alone option look incomplete. Start with the storage location and system size you actually need.

The extras that are still required

App, account and Wi-Fi

The official setup sequence starts with installing the eufy Security app and signing in or creating an account. The E340 connects to the home wireless router and supports 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, not 5 GHz Wi-Fi. On-device storage therefore removes a cloud-storage subscription from the basic clip path; it does not turn the product into an account-free, network-free recorder.

The reviewed product and support pages do not promise how every feature behaves during an internet outage. If fully offline recording is a hard requirement, get that behavior confirmed for the current firmware before purchase rather than inferring it from the words "local storage."

Battery and wiring

The E340 can be installed in battery or wired mode. Eufy states that the battery must remain installed even when the doorbell is wired; the wiring keeps the battery topped up rather than replacing it as the device's power source. Check the current wiring specification and chime compatibility before treating an existing doorbell circuit as plug-and-play.

An indoor chime path

A HomeBase is not the only way to hear a ring indoors. Eufy lists a compatible existing mechanical chime, a separately sold eufy Security chime and an Amazon Alexa Echo Show as standalone options. Bundle contents vary, so check whether the listing includes a chime or only the doorbell and battery.

Buy the E340 alone when

The standalone doorbell is the cleaner purchase when:

  • one doorbell is the main system;
  • fixed 8 GB on-device storage is enough;
  • an existing or separate compatible chime route is already available;
  • 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi reaches the door;
  • storing clips in the outdoor device fits the risk and retention plan.

Add a HomeBase when

The bundle is easier to justify when:

  • recordings should be stored inside the home rather than only at the door;
  • several compatible eufy devices will share a system;
  • expandable storage matters enough to choose a supported HomeBase after checking that model's documented E340 features;
  • using the HomeBase as an indoor alert point simplifies the chime setup.

Bottom line: the US E340 does not need a HomeBase. Buy the doorbell alone if its 8 GB fixed storage and your chime path are sufficient; add a HomeBase for centralized or expandable storage and a larger eufy setup, not because the doorbell cannot work without it.
