Choose Sync Module 2 if you want a Blink Video Doorbell to save motion clips locally without a monthly storage plan. Sync Module Core cannot provide Local Storage or Clip Backup. The Core can connect Blink devices and use paid cloud storage, but it has no removable-storage route.

That difference matters because Blink bundles the Core with the Video Doorbell (2nd Gen) in the United States. A hub-shaped device in the box can look like the local-storage part of the system. Blink's current Sync Module Core FAQ says otherwise: the Core is not sold separately and supports cloud storage only with an active Blink Subscription Plan or trial.

Core versus Module 2 at a glance

The short version is simple: Core is a connectivity hub; Module 2 is a connectivity hub with a working USB-A storage port. Do not treat the USB-C power connector on the Core as a storage connection.

What the Core can and cannot do

Sync Module Core relays commands and network information between Blink devices and Blink's servers. It supports up to ten cameras in one system and is compatible with Blink cameras, but compatibility is not the same as storage.

Blink states that the Core has neither Local Storage nor Clip Backup. With an active subscription or trial, clips can go to Blink cloud storage. When that plan or trial ends, adding a USB drive is not an option because the Core has no supported local-storage port.

The Core may still fit a buyer who expects to keep a Blink cloud plan and only needs the included hub to manage a system. It is the wrong choice when the purchase goal is, "save doorbell clips to hardware I own without a recurring storage fee."

What you need for local Video Doorbell clips

Blink's Video Doorbell FAQ says the doorbell does not store clips by itself. For Local Storage, add it to a Sync Module 2 system and insert a recognized USB flash drive.

The current Sync Module 2 requirements specify a Type-A USB drive between 1 GB and 256 GB with at least 375 MB free. The drive is not included with Sync Module 2. Blink may ask permission to reformat it, which erases the files already on that drive, so use storage set aside for the camera system.

Without an active subscription, eligible motion clips are written directly to the USB drive and appear in the Blink app's Local Storage clip list. With an active subscription or trial, cloud clips are backed up to the USB drive once per day instead. Those backup files are not the same as direct Local Storage and must be viewed from the drive on a computer.

Blink also lists Sync Module XR as a separate local-storage route using microSD. That does not change the Core-versus-Module-2 answer: Core is the option in this group that cannot store or back up clips locally.

Local does not mean offline

Sync Module 2 still needs power, an always-on 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi internet connection and setup through the Blink app. The module stores eligible clips on your USB drive, but it is not a stand-alone recorder that removes Blink's account, app or internet requirements.

That distinction is worth checking before purchase. If the requirement is only to avoid a cloud-storage subscription, Module 2 plus USB fits the documented route. If the requirement is for a camera system that continues as a fully independent local recorder when internet service is unavailable, Blink's support pages do not establish that outcome here.

The purchase checklist

Before choosing a bundle, verify all five items:

  1. Read the module name in the listing. "Sync Module included" is not specific enough; look for Core, 2 or XR.
  2. Add the storage accessory. Sync Module 2 needs a separate Type-A USB drive from 1 GB to 256 GB.
  3. Check the exact camera. Blink lists Video Doorbell among the cameras eligible for Sync Module 2 Local Storage.
  4. Decide between local clips and cloud features. A subscription changes Module 2 from direct Local Storage to a daily cloud backup for subscribed cameras.
  5. Keep the network requirement in the budget. The system still depends on power, Wi-Fi, internet and the Blink account/app.

Which one should you buy?

Buy or keep Sync Module Core when the bundle price makes sense, you plan to use Blink cloud storage, and you do not expect the module to save clips locally.

Choose Sync Module 2 plus a dedicated USB drive when local Video Doorbell motion clips without a monthly storage plan are the requirement. If a listing bundles the Video Doorbell (2nd Gen) with Core, include the price of Module 2 and the USB drive in the real comparison before checkout.
