The motion alert came through. The video did not. If this happened just after your Blink trial or subscription ended, check which kind of clip you are looking for before you reset a module or format a drive. An old cloud recording, a daily backup and a new local recording can all belong to the same camera, but they do not live in the same place.
Checked September 29, 2026 against Blink's US support instructions. This is a way to narrow the problem, not a finding that every missing clip has the same cause.
First, name the clip
| The clip you want | Where Blink says to look | What the plan change means | |---|---|---| | Recorded before the plan ended | The Cloud location in the Blink app | Existing cloud clips remain until their auto-delete date or manual deletion; they do not become new local clips. | | Backed up while a plan or trial was active | The USB drive in Sync Module 2 or microSD in Sync Module XR, viewed on a computer | Blink makes eligible cloud-clip backups about once daily. These backup files are not playable from the app's Local Storage list. | | Recorded after the plan ended | The Local Storage location in the app, if the camera and module are eligible and removable storage is recognized | New eligible clips can save directly to USB or microSD without a cloud plan. Sync Module Core has no such storage route. |
That middle row catches people out. Seeing files on a drive during a trial does not show that direct Local Storage is working after the trial. Blink's storage-options guide distinguishes the two jobs.
Then make five checks without erasing anything
- Select the right storage location in the clip list. Look for Cloud or the Local Storage entry tied to the intended system. If you have more than one Sync Module, make sure you picked the right one. Blink's clip troubleshooting guide explains the storage selector.
- Read the exact module name. Sync Module 2 uses a Type-A USB drive; Sync Module XR uses microSD. Sync Module Core cannot record locally. If you have Core, a USB-shaped power connection will not turn it into a clip store. The Core-versus-2 buying guide helps identify that hardware mistake.
- Check that the drive is recognized and has room. Blink specifies a 1–256 GB drive or card with at least 375 MB free. The module's Local Storage screen should report the attached storage. A full or unrecognized drive cannot be assumed to hold your next event.
- Check the camera and recording settings. The system must be armed and motion detection enabled for motion clips. Confirm that the exact camera supports Local Storage; Blink excludes older XT, XT2 and first-generation Indoor cameras. A notification alone does not prove that a video was saved.
- Check power and network status. Sync Module 2 requires power and always-on 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi internet. Blink says an interrupted or unsteady connection can fail a clip download. The alert, the camera event and the stored video are separate steps.
Do not use “reformat” as an exploratory button. Blink warns that formatting erases the drive. Deleting a cloud clip is permanent, too. If a clip matters, preserve the current storage first.
If you still need the file
For an old daily backup or a clip that is absent from the app's recent list, use Blink's safe-eject and computer instructions. Safely eject the USB drive or microSD card in the app before removing it. Blink notes that the app may show only the latest 1,000 Local Storage clips from the last 30 days; the drive can hold more. Check the files on a computer before concluding they disappeared.
If the expected file is missing there as well, note the camera model, module model, whether the plan or trial was active at the event time, the clip time, available storage and the exact app message. Give that to Blink Support. It is a more useful starting point than “local storage is broken,” and it does not claim to know whether your case is a drive, network, settings or service issue.
If you are still choosing hardware rather than recovering a clip, start with the video-doorbell local-storage guide. If the question is whether the system records through an internet outage, use the separate return-window outage test. Local storage and offline recording are different promises.
